Where To Stay?

A cycling holiday, fortunately, is a highly individual experience. Bicycle, route, lenght of a day’s ride, and so on, is up to oneself; and of course the same applies to overnight accomodation. Denmark has more than 500 camp sites, 100 youth hostels and 1000 hotels and inns, so it is not difficult to find a place to sleep, no matter which standard you require.

Youth Hostels
Youth Hostels in Denmark have a very high standard, and often they are attractively located. There are more than 100 Youth Hostels covering the country, and the network has easily cyclable distances between hostels.

A listing and location map is available from the Danish Youth Hostel Association, the Danish Tourist Board, the Danish Cyclist Federation or at any hostel.

There are no age restrictions in Danish hostels. The only requirement is that you have a hostel card, which is obtain- able from your local Youth Hostel Association, the Danish Cyclist Federation or at any hostel.

Most hostels have family rooms, which can be booked by two or more cyclists. Advance booking is advisable during the summertime, and this can be done by telephone from one hostel to another or in advance by using booking cards. Please note that the members’ kitchen provide pots and pans, but not always plates and cutlery. Most hostels offer breakfast and meals.

Camping cites
Camping sites are plentiful and generally well-equipped. There are some 500 approved sites with 1 to 3 star ratings, depending on facilities and location. Many sites have areas reserved for those with small tents only.

A book, “Camping Denmark” will give you all information.

An international camping carnet is required.

Nature camps
Over the past few years, nature camps have become extremely popular. More than 500 farmers throughout the country have offered an area for camping at a very low cost, and these camps are for hikers and cyclists only.

No camping carnet is required, and booking is usually not necessary. Facilities are few but water supply and toilets are standard. A book lists and maps all details. The purpose of nature camps is to provide cyclists and hikers with new places to camp, where they will come in closer contact with nature.

Please note that camping on public land or beaches is not allowed.

Hotels and Inns
Hotels are rather more expensive. The lowest price approximately DDK 400 for doubleroom. Ins are generally a little cheaper.

Bed and Breakfast
A growing number of private homes are now offering bed and breakfast. Rooms can be booked privately or through the local tourist office.

Farm Tourisme
Another possibility is “Farm Tourisme”.

Wild Camping
Wild camping is not officially allowed in Denmark, but this should not stop you from trying by asking permission of the owner of the piece of land.
